Local Keyword Research for Bangkok: Finding the Words Customers Actually Type

"Dental clinic Bangkok" is a knife fight with hospital groups. The customers you want type service + neighborhood, in Thai AND English — here's how to find and win those phrases.

Local Keyword Research for Bangkok: Finding the Words Customers Actually Type

A dentist in Silom spent a year trying to rank for "dental clinic Bangkok" — a phrase where she was competing against hospital groups, national chains, and aggregator sites with entire SEO departments. Meanwhile, every week, people nearby were searching "dentist near BTS Chong Nonsi" and "คลินิกฟัน สีลม เปิดเสาร์" — phrases where the actual competition was three clinics within a kilometer. One of them quietly owned both.

That's the whole game of local keyword research: not finding the biggest phrases in the city, but finding the phrases where you can plausibly win — because they describe exactly what you do, exactly where you do it, for exactly the people nearby. And in Bangkok the game has a twist most guides skip: your customers type in two languages, and those two languages behave like two different markets.

Here's the working method — seed lists from your own customers, modifiers that make phrases winnable, the Thai/English split, validation against live search results, and how to map the final list onto pages and profile instead of a spreadsheet nobody reads.

Direct answer

Local keyword research means collecting the exact phrases nearby customers type before they know your name, then choosing the ones you can realistically win. Build the seed list from your own customers' language — phone questions, reviews, LINE messages — then add neighborhood and BTS modifiers, do it separately for Thai and English, and validate each phrase by looking at the live search results: if the map pack is dominated by businesses unlike you, the phrase is wrong no matter its volume. Finally, map each chosen phrase to one page or one profile field. :::

Start With What Customers Already Say

The best keyword tool for a local business is its own inbox. Before touching any software, harvest the language your customers already use:

  • Phone and LINE questions: "Do you do same-day crowns?", "คลินิกเปิดถึงกี่โมง", "is parking hard?" — each recurring question is a phrase with proven demand.
  • Review text: your best keyword research is already written by your customers. Reviews say "great latte art course" — there's a product phrase you might not have thought to target.
  • The autcomplete trick: type your service into Google Maps or Google search and pause — the suggestions are live searches by real people near you. Do it once from your shop and once from elsewhere; the difference is itself data.
  • Front-desk staff: ask them what people ask for most. They've been running your keyword research for free.

This gives you a seed list with something no database has: proof that your actual customers use these words.

Modifiers: How Phrases Become Winnable

A naked phrase ("dental clinic") is a knife fight with the entire internet. Modifiers are what turn citywide brawls into neighborhood contests you can win:

Modifier typeExampleWhat it signals
Neighborhooddentist Silom, ร้านกาแฟ อารีย์Local intent, small competition radius
Transit landmarkdentist near BTS Chong NonsiPeople navigating, ready to visit
Service specificitysame-day crown, Invisalign ราคาHigher intent, less competition
Languageคลินิกฟัน vs dental clinicA whole different competitor set
Time/attributeเปิดเสาร์, open Sunday, 24 ชม.Ready-to-buy urgency
Price/insuranceราคา, คลายฟัน ราคา, insurance acceptedCommercial intent

The pattern to aim for: service + neighborhood or service + landmark in both languages. "Coffee roaster Ari" and "ร้านคั่วกาแฟ อารีย์" are two separate contests, both smaller and both more valuable to a business physically there than "coffee Bangkok" ever will be.

Seed:      dentist
Modified: dentist Silom · dentist near BTS Chong Nonsi

The Thai/English Split Is Two Markets

This is the part generic keyword guides get wrong for Bangkok. Thai and English searchers don't just use different words — they behave differently:

  • English searches skew toward expats, tourists, and international businesses: "dentist Sukhumvit English speaking", "SEO agency Bangkok". Competition includes English-content sites, which are often fewer but stronger.
  • Thai searches are the volume center of gravity: รับทำ SEO, คลินิกฟันใกล้ฉัน, เช็คอันดับ Google Maps. Common Thai patterns to know: รับทำ (service-for-hire), ใกล้ฉัน (near me), ราคา (price), เช็ค (check), and neighborhood names in Thai spelling (สีลม, ทองหล่อ, รัชดา).
  • The competition sets barely overlap. Ranking #1 in English says almost nothing about your Thai position, and vice versa. Research, track, and optimize them as separate campaigns.

Practical move: run your seed list twice — once in English, once in Thai — and treat the outputs as two lists for two audiences that happen to share a city.

Validate Against the Live SERP Before Committing

Volume numbers are the most overrated column in keyword research. For local SEO, the live search results page tells you more than any estimate, in three minutes, for free. For each candidate phrase, actually search it (from a location in your service area, or with the location named in the phrase):

  • Is there a map pack at all? If the phrase shows no local pack, it's not a local phrase — deprioritize it for profile work.
  • Who's in the pack? If it's dominated by businesses unlike you (a hospital group for a solo clinic, a national chain for an independent shop), you're looking at a long expensive fight. If it's businesses your size, it's winnable.
  • What do their profiles look like? Weak categories, few reviews, stale photos — the pack is soft. Complete profiles with hundreds of reviews — budget accordingly.
  • Does anything local rank in the organic results? A phrase where the top ten organic results are directories and aggregators is a page-content battle, not a profile battle. Different work, different timeline.
{
  "phrase": "คลินิกฟัน สีลม",
  "mapPack": true,
  "packComposition": "3 independent clinics, 40-120 reviews",
  "organicTop10": "2 directories, 3 hospitals, 5 clinics",
  "verdict": "winnable via GBP + neighborhood page"
}

That verdict column — winnable via profile work, winnable via a page, or skip — is the actual output of keyword research. Not a giant list. A short list with decisions attached.

Map Keywords to Assets, Not to a Spreadsheet

A list of 300 keywords helps nobody. The end state of local keyword research is: every chosen phrase owns exactly one home.

  • One phrase per profile signal. Your primary category is your head phrase; services carry service phrases; Q&A and posts carry question phrases. Don't repeat the same phrase in five fields — that's stuffing, and it dilutes.
  • One phrase per page. A neighborhood page for Silom, a service page for same-day crowns, a bilingual page where the audience genuinely mixes. Two pages competing for one phrase splits your own strength.
  • Both languages get real homes. A Thai phrase deserves Thai content, not a translated footer paragraph. If you can't maintain real Thai content, target fewer Thai phrases and do them properly.

And when in doubt about which phrase to pursue first: pick the one where the map pack currently contains a business you know you're better than.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need paid keyword tools for local research?

Not to start. Your customer language, autocomplete, and live SERP checks cover 80% of local keyword decisions — and SERP composition matters more than volume estimates anyway. Paid tools earn their keep later, when you're tracking many phrases across grids over time or comparing across many locations. Validate first, subscribe second.

How many keywords should a small local business target?

Fewer than you think: roughly 5–10 phrases for a single-location business — a head phrase, a few service phrases, and two or three neighborhood phrases — in each language you serve. Ten phrases properly mapped to profile fields and pages beat a hundred phrases scattered across thin content everywhere.

How do I know which language my customers search in?

Look at your own data: the language of your reviews, your LINE messages, and the phrases people use on the phone. In Bangkok most businesses see both, in different proportions — a Thonglor café gets expat English searches, an Ari hardware store gets almost entirely Thai. Serve the mix you actually have, and check your GBP insights (which search phrases found you) as it accumulates.

Should I create a page for every neighborhood in Bangkok?

No — only for neighborhoods you genuinely serve and can say something real about. Ten near-identical pages swapping district names is a template pattern that helps neither users nor rankings. One strong Silom page with real specifics (parking, BTS exit, hours, photos) outperforms a dozen thin ones, and neighborhood pages for places you don't actually serve set expectations you can't meet.

The phrases that matter aren't the ones with the biggest numbers — they're the ones where the person typing is standing ten minutes from your door, in a language you speak. Find those, give each one a real home, and the spreadsheet takes care of itself.
